UFC 306 heads to the Sphere in Las Vegas for two highly anticipated title fights. Merab Dvalishvili will challenge champion Sean O’Malley for the bantamweight belt in the main event. The co-main event features a trilogy bout between women’s flyweight titleholder Alexa Grasso and former champ Valentina Shevchenko.
Also on the card is an intriguing matchup between ranked featherweights Brian Ortega and Diego Lopes.
With a card full of compelling matchups, here are some odds that caught our attention:
Odds via FanDuel Sportsbook
Grasso vs Shevchenko 3 – Fight to go the distance: Yes (-215)
These two women are so evenly matched that their trilogy bout could result in more questions than answers. If Shevchenko wins, their record against each other would be 1-1-1, meaning a fourth fight would be inevitable. The situation is reminiscent of Brandon Moreno vs. Deiveson Figueiredo, a fight that went down four times.
The last fight between Grasso and Shevchenko was a split draw, and though each fighter had moments, the fight never felt like it was going to be stopped. Grasso submitted Shevchenko in the first matchup, but I just don’t see that happening again.
Around 63% of women’s flyweight fights go the distance, so this is a safe bet.
Irene Aldana vs. Norma Dumont: Aldana -108
The odds have this as a pick ‘em fight, but Aldana is the superior fighter and it isn’t necessarily close.
None of Dumont’s seven UFC victories have come by stoppage. She was knocked out by Megan Anderson in her debut in 2020 and has since employed a conservative gameplan in every fight. She previously competed at featherweight and has since moved down to bantamweight after the women’s 145-pound division was discarded.
Even though Aldana was beaten handily by Amanda Nunes, her experience against the best competition will serve her well. She has also faced Holly Holm and Raquel Pennington, both of whom have held a UFC belt. Aldana’s boxing is among the best in the division and she has logged four finishes during her UFC tenure.
All signs point to an Irene Aldana victory.
Raul Rosas Jr. vs. Aoriqileng: Rosas Jr. to win by submission -160
Rosas Jr., the UFC’s youngest star, will kick off the card. The card is Mexican-themed, so the UFC likely wants to kick off the night with a win from one of their most popular Mexican fighters.
Two of Rosas Jr.’s three UFC wins have come by submission, and he instinctively puts the pressure on his opponents and shoots takedowns as soon as the fight begins. Aoriqileng has been taken down 12 times in seven UFC fights, so Rosas Jr. has a clear advantage on the ground. Expect him lock in a choke sooner rather than later.
