The fifth full week of the college football season was the best one yet. Three top 10 teams suffered their first defeat: Georgia’s furious rally in Tuscaloosa came up just short, Ole Miss was upset at home by Kentucky, and Utah was routed by Arizona as they struggled without starting quarterback Cam Rising.
The new 12-team playoff will include the five highest-ranked conference champions and seven at-large teams. The four highest ranked champions will receive first-round byes, while other eight teams will play on-campus games hosted by the seeds 5-8.
This week, we’re giving an updated CFP projection and comparing it to our preseason picks.

My bold prediction of Alabama missing the postseason isn’t panning out too well, and I’ll hold myself accountable for that. Jalen Milroe is among the frontrunners for the Heisman trophy, accounting for a total of 18 touchdowns in four games and leading his team to a victory over Georgia. The Tide have done more than enough to warrant a No. 1 ranking.
Kansas State, Tennessee and Missouri are new additions to the projection. Despite a blowout loss to BYU, Kansas State rebounded with a big win against Oklahoma State, and with Utah losing, the Wildcats look to be the top team in the Big 12. Tennessee has been one of college football’s most impressive teams, already notching a pair of ranked wins against N.C. State and Oklahoma. Missouri hasn’t proven much, especially after their dog fight with Vanderbilt. The Tigers are undefeated, though, and have a relatively weak SEC schedule with Alabama and Oklahoma being their only ranked opponents.
Utah, Ole Miss, Notre Dame and LSU are all no longer in my projected playoff rankings, but each could fight their way back into contention. One loss isn’t the end of the world in this revamped format, but these squads will need to be nearly perfect the rest of the way.
I still have Boise State filling the fifth conference champion slot and making the playoff as the No. 12 seed, but there is a possibility that they can end up with a better ranking than the Big 12 champion. A late-season matchup against UNLV may determine the final playoff spot.
