Expect it most when you expect it least.
Week 6 of the 2024 college football season was one of the most memorable in recent history, with seven ranked teams losing in a week where there was only one matchup between ranked opponents.
In case you needed a refresher, here are the notable losses from the weekend:
- No. 1 Alabama 35, Vanderbilt 40
- No. 4 Tennessee 14, Arkansas 19
- No. 9 Missouri 10, No. 25 Texas A&M 41
- No. 10 Michigan 17, Washington 27
- No. 11 USC 17, Minnesota 24
- No. 22 Louisville 27, SMU 34
- No. 25 UNLV 41, Syracuse 44
This is even crazier when you realize that only 18 of the top 25 teams were in action this weekend. At this juncture, it feels like there isn’t a “dominant” team this year that is poised to run the table. The 12 playoff spots are still wide open.
The new 12-team playoff will include the five highest-ranked conference champions and seven at-large teams. The four highest ranked champions will receive first-round byes, while other eight teams will play on-campus games hosted by the seeds 5-8.
This week, we’re giving an updated College Football Playoff projection and comparing it to our Projections After Week 5.

Seven of the teams projected to make the playoff now have a loss, and it’s possible that we’ll see multiple two-loss teams in the postseason.
Boise State holds strong in the fifth conference champion slot, and there’s a realistic chance for the Broncos to move up the rankings if these Power Five teams continue to beat up on each other. They may even finish with a higher ranking than the Big 12 champion, which would put them in the four slot.
Alabama and Tennessee remain in the playoff projection despite losing, and undefeated Miami fell out of the rankings after two close calls with unranked teams. The Hurricanes are a top ten team, but the new CFP system may not allow for two ACC teams to make the cut. Right now, Clemson looks significantly better.
Expect some more movement at the top of the rankings this week as Ohio State travels to Oregon, Ole Miss visits LSU, and Texas and Oklahoma square off at the Cotton Bowl.
